The Íslensku lífeyrissjóðirnir dashboard is a comprehensive analytics platform tracking the performance, assets, and structure of Iceland's mandatory pension fund sector from 2020 through 2025. Iceland operates one of the world's most capitalised pension systems relative to GDP, with sector assets exceeding ISK 8,800 billion by 2025.
This platform aggregates annual report data from Iceland's eleven largest pension funds — including LSR (Lífeyrissjóður starfsmanna ríkisins), LV (Lífeyrissjóður verzlunarmanna), Gildi, Birta, Brú, Frjálsi, Almenni, Stapi, Festa, SL (Söfnunarsjóður lífeyrisréttinda), and Bankamanna. For each fund and each year, the dashboard presents total assets in ISK millions, nominal and real investment returns, actuarial position (surplus, balanced, or deficit), private equity and unlisted asset allocations, and ongoing or completed merger activity. A sector-level growth chart shows total assets rising from ISK 4,137 billion in 2020 to ISK 8,878 billion in 2025, illustrating the steady accumulation of retirement savings despite the turbulent 2022 market environment in which all funds posted negative real returns.
The dashboard is designed for financial analysts, economists, journalists, policymakers, and individual members who want transparent, year-over-year insight into Icelandic pension fund performance. It is also a reference tool for researchers studying Nordic pension systems, institutional investors evaluating Iceland's capital markets, and fund managers benchmarking their own results against sector averages. The 3.5% real-return actuarial benchmark is highlighted throughout, making it immediately clear which funds meet or exceed their long-term sustainability targets in any given year.
This dashboard is an independent research project built to bring greater transparency to Iceland's pension sector. Data is sourced exclusively from the publicly available annual reports published by each fund. All figures are presented for informational purposes only and do not constitute financial advice.
